Serengeti Cheetah Project:
The Effects of Prey Density, Apex Predators, & Cubs on Cheetah Hunting Behavior, 2012--2017
As part of the Serengeti Cheetah Project run by Dr. Sarah Durant, we examined hunting strategies of cheetahs in the face of other dangerous predators like lions. Cheetahs must hunt to live, and while on the hunt suffer from direct predation on their cubs by lions and hyenas, who also steal their prey. Anne Hilborn took a functional-response approach to questions regarding how cheetahs choose to hunt in relation to reproductive staus, hunger level, prey density, and more.
